Charters Towers State High School is pleased to be able to offer students in Year 8 and Year 10 the ability to Bring Your Own Device (BYOx).
(BYOx describes a digital device ownership model where students or staff use their privately owned devices to access the network and information systems in an educational setting.)
Is it mandatory for students to bring a laptop? No. This is entirely an opt in option to support the learning of your student at school.
Why BYOx?
A BYOx program promotes:
Staff and students
investigating, creating and communicating using information communication
technologies (ICTs) and digital technology
operating with ICTs effectively and efficiently.
Engagement in learning.
How will this model work at Charters Towers State High School?
Limited to laptops only; no tablets, phones or other devices.
The devices must be able to hold a charge for a full day as no recharging will be permitted at school.
Running a Windows 7 or later operating system will provide the balance between flexibility and support.
No Android or Mac devices as trials using these products show that staff and students struggle with real time use and support.
Device connectivity
Wireless access provided for compatible devices.
Technical support provided? This will be limited to getting on the network.
Support for devices will need to warranty based and the responsibility of the student/parents.
Insurance should be considered as damage to the machine is a possibility and will not be covered by the school.
Device registration? While the devices will not be joined to the network there will be a registration process and document to sign for permission for the devices to be brought to school and connected the network.
No other devices will be permitted and our Electronic Device Policy (PDF, 190KB) is still in effect.
